Abiola Bashorun is a Psychologist and Humanitarian who believes that every adolescent and young adult female deserves to be well-nurtured physically, cognitively and socio-emotionally, regardless of her background, status, shortcomings, creed, religion or tribe. She runs two businesses and a non-governmental organization all centered to cater for the girl child.
In 2010 Abiola founded a non-governmental organization called GIRLFRIENDS CLUB. The organization’s mission is to help girls blossom into the fullness of their potentials with the help of young volunteer psychologists, counsellors, medical practitioners and legal officers. Over 30,000 school girls across Nigeria have benefited immensely from several workshops that we have put together since the club’s inception.
In 2012, she launched Abiola Nurtures, a self-branded social enterprise that provides Guidance and Counselling services to the young female demographic and to persons involved with nurturing the girl-child.
She tours all-girl secondary schools to speak to them about being assertive, beautiful, confident, diligent, queenly, respectful, virtuous and more. Each guidance session lasts about 30 minutes per school, comprising of talks, Q&A period, sharing of incentives and a few one-on-one counselling time. She has toured over 65 schools in two years and nurtured over 40,000 school girls personally.
In April 2014, she spoke at the 2014 United Nations International Women’s Day Celebration put together by the Office of The Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs, Community Development, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation, Oyo State.
In May 2014, she put together the “Girl Up Yourself” Event. There were educative and inspiring talks by well-seasoned facilitators, artistic presentations and inter-school activities. This conference was supported by Guaranty Trust Bank PLC.
This year, The “Girl Up Yourself” Event is scheduled to hold in Lagos and Ibadan in June.
